I’m currently out of school and working at a part-time job! Art-wise, I’m working on my employment portfolio, personal projects, and some guest work for art books. I’m aiming to finish and put up my portfolio soon and I hope to get some freelance work before the end of the year :’-)

I’m not sure if I want to return to uni to get a degree if I get used to freelancing, but my parents are very adamant that I do ASAP so who knows ( _ _)

Phew finally home, with pictures and a report!

So I went to the Gold Coast Eva exhibition with Anna, Mamath, and Choco today! Thanks so much for the good time guys, especially Choco who knew GC better than the rest of us.

Anna and I wore our Lilith masks for a bit

Aaand then we went into the gallery! Not everything is here, but I uploaded what I could.

Anna got emotional over how cute Shinji looked

There was a corner with some little chairs, coloured pencils, and boards, so we decided to doodle!

Welp that’s all of it, that was the exhibition.

While it was really cool to look at production art, it was actually a pretty underwhelming show? :-( There wasn’t a lot of stuff to see and to be honest we felt a bit cheated… This was the way the exhibition was officially promoted:

The Evangelion Art Exhibition brings together a rare and extensive collection of original concept and production art, character drawings, books, statues and tapestries from the famed Evangelion animated films.

When really, there was only production art - no concept art, books, or statues - and the only two tapestries were of Asuka and Rei. Kind of a let down, but being able to buy some stuff made up for it I guess?

But yeah, LOOT LOOT LOOT

These were stupidly expensive but I gave in… I felt a lot better after buying the pen in particular, Unit 01’s mouth opens when you click it!

Her name is Ying Feng, “but that’s Grandma, Grandma Feng, or Granny Feng to you! G-Fengles is also acceptable.” She’s a sassy roboticist who lives in The Steamboat, the Feng family’s moving restaurant, with her daughter-in-law and grandson, Steven. She offers her services to the city locals as a repairwoman for various machinery, but her interest is mainly in building things (robots).

That’s all I can say for now! Her proper backstory depends on what kind of power source is used in the world of Steamboy/for the robots, but I haven’t decided on a concrete idea for that yet. Once I reach something I’m happy with, I’ll let you guys know more!

I know I hadn’t really introduced her before the Valentines comic, so here’s a draft sketch I did for her design (she wears a labcoat to look professional but she tucks it in her belt to look cool)

I've just started trying to improve at art, and I'm already so frustrated and angry at myself that I feel like quitting. How do I work past this/get over these feelings?

Hey anon!

That’s totally normal and to be expected. The main thing I try to remember in my pursuit for a higher standard is that not everything I/you make is going to be a masterpiece. There are going to be a lot of poopy drawings along the way. The one you’re working on right now might be one of them, and that’s okay! It’s all a part of the process - each “failure” is just another bump on the road to success.

Sometimes I do get so frustrated that I find it hard to continue what I’m working on, so these are the two ways I go about getting over it:

THIS ISN’T WORKING I AM TERRIBLE.. BUT I GOTTA KEEP GOING!!! I CAN DRAW MYSELF OUT OF THIS UGLINESS I CAN DO IT URAYAAYRAYYRAAAA
Wow this is just making me depressed I am going to stop for now. I’m in a bout of self-loathing, I think I need some recovery time. I’ll hate myself for a moment, then listen to the nice things my friends have to say, then remember what I actually like about my art! Then I’ll try again later, with a fresh perspective.

Personally, I’ve found that number 2 has been the most helpful to me since my art usually turns out a lot better when I am in a better mood. Hope this helps!

PS The best piece of advice I got from a friend about trying to improve was, “If you’re going to climb a mountain, you might as well enjoy the view every now and then!”

Valentines Day has obviously passed, but I still wanted to finish this to try new things! Colour comics are taxing but super fun, and I learnt stuff. Hopefully Steamboy as a comic will be much better!

So I was wondering if you could maybe make a tutorial/walkthrough/step-by-step/speedpaint of how you draw your pictures and then paint them. PLEEEEEEAAAAASE! Maybe you’re just talking about the calibre of art, but I think it’s important to find your own way of doing things as well. Not to say that you have to be totally original (which is impossible nowadays), but limiting yourself to the goal of having your art look like someone else’s isn’t great for your artistic development, I think.. The mindset I have towards my art inspirations is not to draw just like them, but to build up a similar understanding of art concepts that I can render in my own image.

Anyway, I have two sort-of tutorials linked in my FAQ page, but I’ve been thinking of doing a process video for a full illustration too? I’m kind of wary of making a full tutorial since I still don’t have a very solid process, but we’ll see! I’ll do what I can.
